Kawhia / Raglan
fishing report
June 5, 2020
Despite the weather being a bit up and down, we did fish all of the long weekend. The fishing has been great for this time of the year, with plenty of snapper allowing limit bags commonly. On the slower days, there are lots of gurnard around at the moment, and they can be a great size often jumping on the dropper rigs two at a time.
There are a lot of small snapper around that can aggressively pick your baits to bits, but they aren't too much of a problem, and we are happy to come back and see them in a few year’s time .
Generally, the size of the snapper varies between four and fifteen pounds, great eating through that entire size range.
Thankfully, not too many spiney sharks about at present, just the odd one here and there.
Fresh kahawai and couta strips seem to work best in the bait department.
By the way, in case you like a good tussle, there’s still a few kingfish lurking around, and most days out we are catching a few.
The weather windows are getting smaller but still some great weather and fishing to be had over the next few months. The weekend is not looking flash so maybe plan from Wednesday onwards.
All our best fishing has been happening off Albatross Point and a little further south in the 40-60 metres zone.
Cheers
Rob
