Recent fishing south of Kawhia have yielded impressive catches of large snapper and various bycatch. Window to get out next Saturday
Hi Team,
I've been doing plenty of fishing over the last few weeks, enjoying some very nice winter sea conditions. These might be some of the best conditions we've had at any time of the year, with very little wind and swell. The fishing has been amazing, especially fishing shallow around 30-40 meters south of Kawhia near the area of Harihari, just south of Port Taharoa.
The snapper have been of great size, ranging from 4-15 pounds, with plenty at the higher weight end. Limit bags have been common most days, some achieved before lunch and others requiring full days of fishing—very good for late July. There's been a bit of bycatch too: John Dory, gurnard, kahawai, and still the odd kingfish. Thankfully, there have been few spiny dogs or sharks at all. All baits seem to be effective, with bonito, barracouta, and fresh kahawai all working well.
Weather-wise, it's looking pretty average for the week, but there's a good gap next Saturday.
Kind regards Rob & Jacqui Fitzgerald
