Solid snaps!

Recent improved weather has led to successful fishing trips off Aotea, with great snapper catches, including some over 10 lb, despite occasional slow feeding due to spawning.

Sorry crew, it’s been a while. The weather has been pretty average until the last few weeks. We have finally turned a corner weather-wise, and the fishing hasn't disappointed either. Most days, we are getting limits in 1.5 to 2 hours—that’s a lot of fish, up to 150. The size has been great: 4-6 lb, with plenty over 10 lb as well. Bycatch has been very limited.

For baits, bullet tuna is good if you want the bigger fish, but you can't beat barracouta strip baits—they go down a treat for the bigger models. On the most recent trips, we’ve been fishing 40-50 metres off Aotea, just looking for the clumps of snapper on the bottom. Some of the snapper have started to spawn, and with this happening, some days the fishing can be pretty slow as they are more interested in other things and not feeding.

Take care out there.

Kind regards  Rob & Jacqui Fitzgerald
