Kawhia / Raglan
fishing report
September 8, 2023
Most of the action has been south of Kawhia off Harihari and Marakopa in the 40-60 meters, not a area we would normally fish during this time of the year.
The Bait Board
Welcome to the first edition of the bait board. A quarterly chat on what’s been happening and what’s coming up.
What’s been happening
The winter has been pretty up and down with the weather with limited weather windows but on the flip side we have had some very good fishing for winter. Most of the action has been south of Kawhia off Harihari and Marakopa in the 40-60 meters not a area we would normally fish during this time of the year but it definitely produced the goods. Plenty of good snapper over 10 pounds also bit of bycatch gurnard trevally and it wouldn’t be fishing without the good old Kahawai in the mix. Spiney dogs have been pretty much off the menu so far.
Looking Forward
September is the start of the spring fishing season and things are going to start ramping up as we progress from now on things will only get better and better in the lead up to Christmas. I’m sure we are in for some insane days on the water with plenty of bendy rod action. Currently we have been fishing around 60-70 meters up towards Gannet island this seems to be the normal trend for this time of the year. Then the fish slowly move in closer and south as we progress through spring. If you’re thinking about booking a trip prior to Christmas then do it soon as space is filling fast on both boats. Due to sustained cost increases across all of our suppliers we have had to increase our price to $160 pp for this season.
