Not that it ever got that bad, but right now, fishing has started to go off the dial again! The kingfish are hard on the bite currently, and we are only catching them on the bottom whilst snapper fishing. We’re getting them most days in good numbers and they are not babies either, most around 10-15 kgs so they are giving the bottom fishing gear a great workout.

Snapper have been on the smaller side compared to what we normally catch, averaging 30-45 cm (which is really the best size for eating) but found a very good patch of donkeys on our last trip that ranged 8-17 lb.

Plenty of kahawai about, some days beyond a joke but hey that’s fishing.

Some gurnard about that have been a great size, but numbers pretty low on these guys.

Most fishing has been in 45-55 meters straight off the bar leads.

The bigger snaps seem to be south of Taharoa also in the same depth and there’s a few less kahawai down there.

The water is still very blue and plenty of smaller skippys are around which would make excellent marlin baits.

Our favorite lure is a pink and white about 75mm long.

Be careful pulling skippys in as the hooks can pull easy.

Cheers

Rob
