Young anglers are making the most of the superb fishing opportunities on the west coast.

It's great to see a few kids getting out on the water and catching some really great fish. The west coast isn't the calmest place, but we do have some fantastic weather and great opportunities. Lately, we have been fishing pretty close to home on the Aotea reef; we've had some great fishing with snapper up to 15lb. Some trips are slower than others, but there can be some pretty intense action.

Just a word of caution: some parts of the reef rise up to 10 meters, and if there is a big swell running, these parts can break or become very steep. Just watch these areas before you anchor. The fishing around the edges, between the rock and sand, is also great.

Most areas along the coast, from 10-20 meters, should still be fishing well for the month. Looking at the weather for May, it’s looking pretty settled with a bit of easterly wind coming near the middle of the month, but not much swell. May fishing can still be very productive and offers great weather.

Thanks, Rob.
