fishing report
May 24, 2024
Despite challenging weather conditions, there have been successful fishing outings at Aotea Reef and nearby areas, with unexpected marine sightings adding to the excitement.
Fishing opportunities have been scarce recently due to the current weather patterns, although there have been some very nice days inland. Sea conditions, however, haven't been favorable. When we have been able to get out, the fishing has been quite good; Aotea Reef, for instance, has been productive at times, though it can also be slow, so it might be worth exploring the sandy areas nearby.
We've had some nice catches in 14 meters off Ocean Beach. It might be time to start looking further out, around 50-60 meters off Albatross Point or a bit further south. All baits seem to be working, though the fish can be slow to bite as the water cools down. Interestingly, we spotted a marlin in 34 meters off the bar, feeding hard on the surface. This sighting was confirmed by a video one of the punters captured. It’s unusual to see marlin this close in at this time of year—seems he must have lost his way. The sea always has something different to offer each year.
The weekend weather is looking pretty bad, but fingers crossed, the long-range forecast looks good for the King's birthday weekend. If you're interested, we do have spots available over that weekend.
Kind regards Rob & Jacqui Fitzgerald
