Fishing report for Kawhia / Raglan supplied by Rob and Jacqui at Venturer Charters on Friday the 12th of April 2024

Hi All,

We've been mixing things up a bit lately in terms of fishing areas and have had some great results. Out in 65-70 meters on some foul ground—a large area of very low reef—you'll need a good sounder to locate it. The fishing has been very good, with abundant snapper and plenty of other species such as blue cod, terakihi, red snapper, trevally, and a few other little reef dwellers.

At the other end of the scale, I've been fishing in 10-20 meters well south of Kawhia, about 14 miles out. There are plenty of very good snapper here. Just cruise along the coastline until you find some signs, and you should be on the money. We have found that barracouta bait seems to be out-fishing the bonito at present.

On the game fishing front, there are still plenty of skippys around at depths of 30-60 meters. The skippys seem to prefer little squid lures in purple, black, white, and pink. Some very nice water is still in close, and we have also seen marlin in 25 meters of water, so they are still about.

The weather for the weekend isn’t looking great at all. Monday to Wednesday are the picks, and then it's all downhill from there.

Kind regards  Rob & Jacqui Fitzgerald
