The fishing is going gang busters at present, most days we are done in three hours.

Although the weather has been pretty terrible for most of the North Island being hammered by easterlies, this favours us somewhat on the west coast, and it’s the place to be fishing at the moment.

It’s pretty much just snapper and the odd terakihi and gurnard, but we even got a random puka off the sand recently, so you never quite know what can turn up.

Random puka always welcome

Spiney dogs have been showing face now and a again but generally you can push through them.

Snapper have really come on the bite again, pretty strange to have them around in such force this time of the year, but hey, not much has been normal of late.

All our fishing has been around 40-60 meters south of Taharoa.

Our summer visitors are starting to turn up now too.

There’s marlin around, although still out pretty wide in 100 meters plus so far.

Albacore tuna are showing up in close 40-50 metres south of Albatross Point, but they come and go pretty quickly depending on the food supply.

Gannets and mutton birds are a pretty sure sign they are around.

Skippys are also scattered about, some in close but mostly 60 meters plus, and little pink lures seem to do the trick for catching them.

We will post some pics in next week’s report.

Cheers

Rob
