fishing report
March 18, 2022
As we fall out of summer and into autumn, the fishing out this way is still amazing, with plenty of snapper to be found in 40-50 metres south of Taharoa. If that’s a bit far, there’s also good fishing also in 50-60 meters off Albatross Point. We have had no trouble catching snapper limits most days, and some days getting it done before lunch, and the sizes have been pretty solid.
Kahawai can be a problem some days (assuming you don’t prefer them) but they make pretty good snapper bait.
Kingfish are becoming pretty regular inhabitants of the bin lately, mostly racing models around the 10 kg mark. We don’t usually specifically target them, so if you fish jigs you could end up having some fun or hooking a monster snapper.
Trevs have also been about in good numbers, and on the odd day gurnard have seemed to appear when the dominant snapper bite is slower.
Earlier in the season the gamefishing looked promising, as last year was a banger, but marlin have not really fired as we would have hoped.
There have definitely been fewer sightings in close, but out past 100 metres there are still a few about.
In past weeks there had been plenty of albacore tuna about in the 60 metre zone, but over the last few days the water has lost its real blue colour, and with it the fish. Hopefully this is just tidal flow but we will see.
There should still be a few weeks still of good game fishing based on previous years, so now is probably a good time to try and catch the tail end of it.
Saturday is looking mint then it goes a bit pear shape for a few days and the later part of the week looking ok again. That’s part and parcel of fishing out here, you take your opportunities when you can.
Cheers
Rob
