So close to being able to get back out in our boats again. In the meantime, landbased sessions, kayakers and kayaks are getting a LOT of attention online here and overseas, surging in interest with the current worldwide ‘stay local’ scenario. With the combination of either convenient fishing at the closest waterway, to “offshore adventures” via a Mothership and a bunch of mates - your pick of destination. ‘Local’ offshore locations like the Mokohinau islands, Gt Barrier and much more is readily accessible, inexpensive and the fishing can be spectacular! Bait free fishing with jigs and softbaits at it’s finest and the rewards can be exceptional, all from a kayak. The world is changing.

Even over the past few days of very wintry squalls, some good fishing has been found along the inner Auckland reaches, with snapper, kahawai and squid on the list, evenings have been the go. With strong average wind speeds, and much higher gust speeds, there’s a definite South Islander type of ‘briskness’ to the air, hail hits, and ultra and sudden stillness, but only teasingly, fleetingly between heavy squalls,  and with tidal flow strong – landbased or kayak with an offshore over the shoulder wind sounds a good fishing plan.

Squid missions with a possible ‘by-catch’ of snapper is becoming an even more popular pastime, and suddenly you have many friends keen to get hold of any extra squid, or calling in friendly favours. Full moon hype is high on the agenda, look out next week! Could be the right time to get out and get into the Spring thing 😉 – next week it’s Spring!

Bring it on!

Cheers, Captain Espresso.
