Anchovy schools and impressive workups have the Hauraki Gulf fishing firing. Even better weather is on the way.

As anchovies draw closer to Auckland’s shorelines, we’re witnessing the typical fluctuations in bait schools, especially noticeable around the recent Wolf Moon. This celestial event has stirred up the inshore bite, showcasing "now you see ‘em, now you don’t" mini workups off Auckland’s North Shore bays towards Rakino. Though the surface frenzy may seem fleeting, don’t be fooled—the action just beneath might still be worth exploring. Silver or white glinting soft baits and jigs, mimicking anchovies, are particularly effective now, not just inshore.

Further out, in the Craddock or Colville channels, the scene boasts impressive workups with whale participation. The general drift fishing approach remains steady despite the high winds which can make chasing these dynamic scenes challenging. The inner islands have been rewarding for anglers using smaller 4-5” soft baits or up to 10gm microjigs. When casting lighter jigs, ensure your setup is suitable; often a standard spin rod setup is too heavy to effectively handle such light gear.

There's also thrilling big-game fishing within a day's trip from various North Island ports, including Auckland. The eastern side of Great Barrier Island has been lively with yellowfin tuna (yft) and striped marlin (stripies) – the best action in years. Have you noticed any skipjack tuna in the Hauraki Gulf yet? These fast, fun little fish create a spectacle when they visit, reminiscent of silver bullets blipping the surface near Tiritiri Matangi just a few seasons ago.

As summer transitions to autumn, expect exceptional fishing opportunities, though there are always days that leave anglers pondering, “Where’s The Fish?” even with clear sounder signs. Here are a couple of tips that could turn your fishing day around. Remember, even with the SailGP yachts gone, the downtown area remains a hotspot for snapper and Aji, which thrive on inshore anchovy schools.

The Fishing School
This is an excellent chance to learn from over 30 years of fishing experience. For those last-minute planners, there are still seats available at The Fishing School. Consider inviting a friend transitioning from bait to lures—what a way to enhance their fishing skills!

Visit the Fishing School on Eventbrite for details.

Be mindful of debris in the Hauraki Gulf, as recent rescues remind us that accidents can happen to anyone. Stay vigilant and enjoy your fishing, whether inshore or offshore, fast and furious or more strategic.
