Hauraki Gulf
fishing report
August 6, 2021
This week we feature a little video from Grant on how to use inchiku jigs that are so effective at this time of year. Check out the video, and go try the lures out in the zone. Typical hit and miss winter conditions mean fishing is never guaranteed out there in the gulf at the moment. But, you can be assured there are plenty of good fish out there when you do hit the right area at the right time. What was there yesterday may not be there today, same time same place, but the fish do tend to hold in the zones where fishing has been solid, and you just have to be patient and wait for the bite to come on.
We’ve had some great fishing mostly out wide, fishing the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ (where fishermen seem to be able to disappear for the day :-p) between Anchorite and the fingers/squiggles right the way to the broken islands off Barrier.
Good varieties of fish are out a bit more west around Little Barrier environs, whether softbaiting in and around the boulders, or out fishing Horn Rock and various smaller pins that lurk around the island.
Kingfish, trevally, gurnard, snapper and the odd frost fish too for a bit of fish-bling! When weather allows it’s a great winter fishing destination. Keep an eye on the western side of the gulf, Kawau area for a surge in fishiness, good signs are lining up.
How about a grand slam style day or three – browse the Tairua Boat Show and catch a southern bluefin tuna out off the eastern Coromandel coast there or thereabouts?
Sounds like a plan to me!
Enjoy these last few weeks of Winter, Spring is but a downwind cast away.
Cheers
