Happy new year all, and welcome to another summer in the calm fishing paradise of the Wellington region. Just a quick update before we get a good period of settled weather top try and get a better handle on how our summer action is going to shape up. To be fair, considering the rest of the country is seeing some wind thanks to our January cyclone, Wellington is not alone with limited fishable windows, and with some interesting turn ups for the book when you do manage to get out.

Happy new year all, and welcome to another summer in the calm fishing paradise of the Wellington region. Just a quick update before we get a good period of settled weather top try and get a better handle on how our summer action is going to shape up. Bluefin tuna have been turning up, perhaps due to the unusual warm water temps, up and down the country, with smaller 15 to 20 kg fish being landed off the west coast of Raglan in just 40 metres of water, and also wider out off the north Island east coast.

Perhaps it’s not so unusual then that there’s been a run of these fish turning up in only 20 to 30 metres from Otaki to Waitarere!

That’s not the only tuna action we’ve seen.  Out wide off mana and Kapiti the albacore have moved in, so if you are keen on getting into these tasty guys here’s a bit more about how to target them.

The puka bite is pretty good at the moment, and we’ve had some good results fishing off Makara for them, and if you are able to get out to Nicholson’s Trench it can be very rewarding.

Not only puka out there, but good bluenose, gemmys and bass.

On the west coast, it has not always been easy to find the snapper, but there’s some good fishing when you do.

Pretty much most of the west coast is also fishing ok for cod, and tarakihi currently too.

For snaps, fishing in close around where the foul and weeds meet the sand, and also out a bit deeper has seen some good fish coming on board.

For the land-based anglers, Oriental, and Evan’s Bay has produced some really great snapper fishing and the slide baiters are picking up some good kingfish, including specimens up to 40 lb.

Palliser Bay continues to perform well for surf casters, with moki still around in decent form, and a few good snaps and the usual kahawai.

Tight lines and stay tuned, we will have some more info coming in soon.

Cheers

Pete
