If you're from Wellington, you know what this time of year is like, with the northerly giving way to a brief two-hour break before the southerly kicks in, back and forth. So, we get out when we can on any coast.

It's been school holidays, and we made the most of it. We had a small window to dive fish one Saturday in early September; visibility was average, and the crays were still in berry. As we drifted and caught the odd kahawai, my rod bent over while I was working a Catch Black Label Livie Shady Lady. To my surprise, a nice healthy snapper surfaced, energizing everyone, and all rods were deployed.

When my son arrived from Australia, we went for a surf cast over the Kapiti Coast where I was out-fished by my son, who loved the kahawai running. A few days later, my son joined me to fish the wharves around inner Wellington Harbour, where he caught small gurnard and cods. After finishing work on the tugs, we went for a few more casts. Four hours later, we had six kahawai and a lovely 42cm cod, which is my son's new personal best—a good catch for the inner harbour off the wharf at Queens. I love the vibrant blues and greens of the big cods, caught using the Shady Lady Mini Squidwing.

A few weeks later, we went on our New Zealand school holidays up north to our family land. Walking the driftwood beaches and casting for kahawai was fun. Even my dad caught some, which was cool—three generations flicking lures, using Catch Fishing Micro Pocket Rockets, Micro Boss, and Mini Squid Wings.

I'm really looking forward to a good day out fishing. Stay positive, and the weather will slowly improve.

Tight lines, everyone.
