Wellington / Kapiti

fishing report

There’s some great looking weather windows and nice small tides coming up, so a good time to get out there and into it. Evans bay has been producing some good snapper this week. Kapiti coast and Palliser Bay have been quiet but don’t write them off. There’s still a good chance of finding fish in numbers and the odd big snapper at this time of year.

Makara and Otaki beach are both worth a crack for a kingi as well.

We got some really nice puka up to 20 kilos off the Makara coast in about 190 metres of water so it’s great to see these fish in good numbers and size again.

The snapper and trevally action off the south end of Mana has also been good in around 35 metres.

More Rays Bream action has been fun, with these great little scrappers also equally good in the pan.  We’ve been having great catches of these silver bullets off Vern’s recently.

Rays bream are prolific out west (midwater) on the 70-200mtr reef areas up and down the coast and they are prolific in most other areas out west, holding mid water on the 70-200 metre reef areas up and down the coast.

In fact, pretty much everywhere is firing for good fish at the moment out on the boat, so it’s just a matter of choosing your favourite target species and going to work on them.

A friend got a really nice 20lb snapper off the beach at Paraparaumu last week which he released, the ultimate reward for a land based fisho, and not bad even off a boat.

There are some big kingis being caught at Hunters, Kapiti and off Boom Rock, and the south coast is also turning up decent kings out deeper around 100 metres.

Snapper fishing has been good at depths of 15mtrs down to 50 metres up and down the west coast and in the harbour from 6-25 metres.

South coast hapuku fishing has been a bit hit and miss but well worth a crack as they are starting to fatten up prior to the winter spawning run.

It’s been a real mixed bag lately of trevs, blue mack, gurnard, snaps, JD and the odd kingi inshore fishing around Wellington, so enjoy the autumn weather when it offers up a good day and best of luck out there.

Cheers

Pete
