fishing report
May 7, 2021
I’m pleased to report the last couple of weeks have been pretty bloody good actually, we had a bad spell for a few weeks there, but a break in the weather has seen some good fishing, especially off the west coast. It can still be a bit gnarly out wide, and I don’t have much to report from out at the Trench, but there has been tons of good fishing from mana down to Ohau.
Snapper have been close in with the water still 17 degrees, and plenty of kingies around too.
There’s been plenty of good kingfish action off Boom on jigs, and no doubt livies would be a good proposition as well.
The puka action has been steady if not amazing, and we are getting a few, and hearing back from customers that they are coming on board out past Mana.
All in all pretty good fishing for those that have been able to escape mid-week.
We’ve had four back-to-back charters and have had solid results on all of them.
The fishing around Pukerua Bay and Makara has been outstanding, mostly for snapper, kings, gurnard, john dory and trevs.
It’s been all systems go for the boaties, not as great for the land-based guys although there was a recent run of really good snapper and moki caught out at the Spit over in Palliser bay in the clear water conditions. Some fish going up to 9 kilos.
Unfortunately, the weather is really looking to pack in a bit now for a few days, right in time for the weekend 😊 But there might be a shot Saturday with northerlies around 15 knots before it really kicks in.
The harbour is fishing well, with plenty of snapper about, from shore and land. Boaties fishing around Somes, Ward and Eastbourne, and Evan’s Bay is the place for the surf casters.
Good luck and catch you soon.
Cheers Pete
