Wellington / Kapiti
fishing report
December 3, 2021
My daughter, Jade, with a nice moki, and a good haul of snapper yesterday from Pukerua Bay. Thankfully, things picking up as a couple of weeks back, the fishing was decidedly average.
We were really enjoying a bumper moki run, and then it all seemed to just quiet off. Even running crayfish baits out under a drone was not getting results where we would normally expect to be smashing it.
I put it down to dirty water conditions. Moki like it clear, and this can make a massive difference to the catch.
After a couple of trips this week, thankfully, the fishing seems to be back on, and we now see moki running all along the south coast, including Sinclair Head this week.
Kapiti has been fishing reasonably, but we had a really tough patch around Pukerua Bay, Mana, Boom, and most of our favourite haunts.
Snapper in particular, have just not been around in the numbers we’ve seen over the last couple of years. Having said that, there are always good fishout there, it’s just the pattern we are noticing of harder fishing.
Spring is typically challenging to fish as far as wind conditions go, and perhaps this is just a temporary glitch on the season for us. This is not just us doing it tough, but other charter guys we talk to and plenty of customer feedback from in the shop.
It’s not all doom and gloom, with the Trench providing a few good puka and bluenose for those that have been able to fish 35 odd kms out from there.
Good sized fish, but not a lot of opportunities to get to them.
However, having managed to get out a bit more this week, weare seeing things pick up a bit, and got a couple of nice snapper off PukeruaBay yesterday, so hopefully a good sign of things getting up to speed.
Snapper are also coming back on it appears, further up and down the west coast, and with temps around 18 degrees we would expect to see some good results becoming more consistent.
The harbour is fishing pretty well with some nice snapper and kingfish caught both from shore and boat from Evans Bay, and Point Gordon.
Tarakihi fishing is going well off Vern’s in around 70metres, so other areas in the zone may also provide some good fishing once the weather gives us a few settled days.
That does not look like it’s due to happen this week, so I guess we sit tight for a bit longer and take our chances when they present.
Cheers
Pete
