Wellington / Kapiti
fishing report
September 24, 2020
A pretty cracker weekend last weekend, there were some good snapper caught, including a few over the magic twenty-pound mark. On one hand the conditions and fishing was tough, because of the dirty water and big tides, but it was nice and fishable with not much wind, so plenty of anglers were able to have a good crack at what was around, and with every man and his dog out, there were some great fish caught.
West was best conditions-wise, but there was no shortage of hardy souls braving the south coast and getting out to the Trench and even further afield such as Steven’s Passage.
Inshore, a lot of terakihi. Cod and snapper were caught which is always to be expected as a staple in Wellington.
The harbour goes well in the big tides as there’s not so much negative affect from the water movement, so when the big tides are running it can actually even be better for moving your berley more effectively. The harbour is also fishing pretty well for most species including snapper.
Surf casters have been going crazy on the kahawai in the harbour, as these fish are still carving up whitebait and seem to be around in good numbers.
Kingies up to twenty kilos were caught out at Hunter’s
It’s the Wellington Surf Casters club comp this weekend, and with some very strong nor-westers the south coast, and White Rock in particular will be getting a caning.
With wind up to 40 knots forecast, there won’t be much boating going on, but surf casters off the south coast will be in their element.
This week you might sneak out Saturday morning, but Sunday to Tuesday, it’s a good time to re rig all the gear, get some chores done, stock up with bait and be ready to go once the big front passes through.
