Top knot basics

Most fishos only need to know five knots. Here's what we reckon they are...

Uni knot

The uni knot is a great knot for attaching fluorocarbon and monofilament line to terminal tackle such as hooks.

  • Line goes through eye of hook
  • Make five turns round the main line
  • Gently tighten
  • Pull knot down and tighten completely
The basic uni-knot is likely to be the most important knot in your arsenal.

Improved Clinch

The improved clinch knot is an extremely quick and easy knot to tie for terminal tackle such as hooks and swivels.

  • Thread the tag end through the eye
  • Make five turns around the standing end
  • Pass tag end through the loop formed
The quick-to-tie improved clinch has a wide range of uses, including by many fly-fisherman.

Dropper Loop

This knot is essential for those who want to make their own ledger rigs. Use it to make loops for your hooks and sinker.

  • Make a loop in the line
  • Turn the lines around each other four times
  • Grab a single loop and pass through the centre of the turns
  • Hold the main loop in your mouth and pull on main line at both ends to tighten
Get your home-made ledger rigs sorted with the dropper loop. Super simple solution beginner fishos targeting species like gurnard, snapper and terakihi. Excellent for deep drops, especially hapuka and bluenose.

Lefty's Loop

The Lefty’s Loop is a great knot to use when softbaiting. It allows the jighead to move more freely on the leader and in turn gives the bait a better action.

  • Make a loop in the line and leave around 6cm of leader
  • Pass the tag end through the jighead eye and back through the loop
  • Make four turns around the leader
  • Pass the tag end back through the original loop
  • Tighten gently
The legendary Lefty's Loop. Ideal for softbaiting and advanced flyfishers.

Albright Knot

The Albright knot is a relatively easy knot to tie two lines together. It’s best used for tying fluorocarbon leader to braided main line when softbaiting or slowjigging.

  • Make a loop in the leader but do not tie it and pass the braided line through it
  • Turn the braid around the leader between 10 and 20 times (fewer turns for heavier line)
  • Pass the line back through the loop in the opposite direction from the way you originally put it through
  • Pull on both main lines slowly to tighten (make sure you wet the fluorocarbon line)
If you need to join two lines without a swivel, you need to know the Albright Knot. Take time to tie it properly as poorly formed Albrights perform poorly.
