The cuffs have come off. The weather is perfect and the top water fishing season has just kicked off in New Zealand. The plan is to head wide to an off shore island that is surround by big fish habitat. Wash rocks, step drop offs and tonnes of current. Big stick baiting rods and reels are rig and ready to do tangle with the the Yellow Tail King Fish.

Night jigging for bluefin has been a successful method for catching these fish when they are feeding down deeper at night, and gives you the option to double your opportunities once you've travelled all the way to the tuna, or when they are just not coming up to hit trolled lures. Here's a few tips on how they rig and the lures used overseas, that will absolutely work here in NZ, as proven by young angler Flyn Jack recently.

The boys are on a 4 day fishing mission in a harbour they were land based fishing a month or so back. Milan managed to land a nice Trevally from the beach so the boys reckon they should have a tonne of fun fishing the harbour in the boat. The fishing was harder then expected so Milan comes up with a crazy idea to catch something different and ends up stuck in the mud.

The boys are fishing in an area they have both heavily fished in years gone by. Both Nathan and Milan haven’t fished the area in over 2 years. This particular part of the Bay Of Plenty is about to become a marine reserve and the boys are super keen to fish it just one more time before it’s locked down to fishing. The dream being to land one last jumbo King Fish for old times sake. Excitement levels start peaking as multiple schools of Kahawai come to the surface to feed late in the afternoon. Top water lures are cast around the schools of feeding Kahawai trying to provoke a bite from New Zealand’s yellow tail King Fish.

Nathan does most of the fishing this time round as Milan isn’t feeling the best after having a root canal done on one of his front teeth only days earlier.

The boys are off on another land based fishing mission on a stunning part of New Zealand’s east coast. Three day's fishing off the rocks trying to get something to eat and hoping to do battle with some big King Fish. The boys are not disappointed, as snapper and kingfish are landed.

It’s mid winter and the harbours should have some beautiful eating Trevally swimming around in them. The plan is to be eating Trevally with spectacular views of the harbour for the next 3 days.

The boys set out to make a educational “best practice” shark fishing video, after a considerable increase in recreational fishermen targeting Sharks. There has also been an increase in accidental Great White Shark captures by recreational fishermen. After some 10 years targeting Bronze Whaler Sharks the boys have only ever seen one Great White Shark and never hooked one while Shark fishing. What takes place completely blows their minds!

I’m a big fan of Z Man soft bait bodies. I’ve used them for many years and found that they are usually my go-to choice, and I’m not alone. The other option is GULP, which are an entirely different proposition, and more recently, Catch and Daiwa entering the market with a very similarly based product to Z Man. That is, a tough, but very stretchy elastomer material in a range of tasty colours.

Our north island road trip with young Flyn Jack (@Flyn Jack Fishing) had us dropping in to see the legendary Bonze (Bonze Lures) for some expert advice on rigging for marlin. Bonze is world famous as a true expert in his field, and if you want advice on how to catch marlin, Bonze is well worth listening to. It was so great to see such a busy man take the time out of his day to help out Flyn, and he gave us some great advice about setting up the boat, which eventually turned out to be very valuable, with Flyn landing his first marlin. It's pretty rough and ready, but I ran the camera to grab some of this advice as Bonze talked to Flyn, so take a look and you might pick up some tips.

The boys make the drive over to the Wild West coast and plan to pitch the tent on the boat and spend a night in the harbour. Snapper are on the hit list as the sun goes down and king fish as the sun comes up. Nato manages to film kings hunting live mullet in 4K 60 frames with his iPhone.

If you’re anything like me, you are lucky enough to regularly find yourself filleting nice eating sized snapper. Surely practice makes every cut perfect then? Yeah, not so much. Every time I think I have filleting dialed, and I might get a few absolutely bang on, there’s always that fish that just throws you, and you end up feeling like Edward Scissorhands on the piss. Here’s a quick vid taken on my phone by my mate Lloyd, after a brilliant morning session on the kayak.

The boys leave the harbour and head down the coast to shelter from the forecasted wind. Later that day the wind drops out and the nearest island seems like it’s worth a visit. After a few stuff ups Milan lands a couple big beautiful king fish.

After a couple years of no fishing, Nato wants to have a crack at catching a king fish on his fly rod. The boys find a pack of ray-riding kingfish and A fly is smashed in what the boys reckon is one of the greatest strikes they have ever seen. Nato manages to catch 2 more solid harbour king fish on live baits that were trailing behind the boat while fly fishing.

After 2 previous fishing trips in the new boat where no kingfish were landed. Milan goes to his favourite spot, where he feels the most confident. The boys anchor up for the night in a sheltered bay and await the sun rise of the next day. They wake to beautiful weather and the fish are biting. The first king fish landed on the boat is a good one.

At 0001 hours on Saturday the 7th of November, the high country fishing season kicked-off throughout Canterbury. Anglers in their hundreds flocked to the iconic Canterbury high country to take part in the annual fishery opening with many anglers out on the water just after midnight. A combination of good weather before the southerly change hit meant anglers were able to celebrate this tradition with gusto. At the annual Lake Coleridge fishing competition over 200 anglers entered the popular contest and many more came for the prize draw.

In this video we take a look at an epic free diving spot North of Auckland in New Zealand. Goat Island is a marine reserve that has a unique biome and completely tame snapper. Snapper are very difficult to catch while spearfishing at the best of times, but the fish have become tame over decades of protection in the marine reserve. They will happily follow divers around and it makes for an excellent free diving location being that it is sheltered and often reasonably clean.
