Adam and lu visiting from wellington. The only decent snapper all day. Seas quite scruffy in the morning south east not forecast. Great and understanding couple.

It is still happening in the local areas, with some great harbour fishing for snapper and trevally. However, I’ve heard from some locals that what worked one night didn’t work the next day. As we all know, that’s fishing—so just keep getting out there!

The weather has been relatively good all around, with temperatures still close to 21 degrees inshore. On that note, has anyone seen any skipjack tuna in any great numbers? I certainly haven’t—just the odd small patch 8 to 10 miles northeast.

Fishing in deeper water for our favourite fish, the good old tarakihi, has been much better over the past week, thanks to the “blood moon” and its effects. Most depths we’re fishing are 80 metres plus, with some down to 110 metres, but when it's on, it’s well worth the extra effort.

Latest news from way out past White Island is that there are still some really big tuna around, up to the 200kg mark.

The kontiki fishers are doing well down in the Papamoa areas and further south towards the Kaituna River.

Regrettably, there are still quite a few bronze whaler sharks about—even in the shallows at Mayor Island—so some “half snapper” are being hauled in. Remember, we are in their backyard, so be tolerant of the whole ecosystem.

A recent unusual catch in Bowentown Harbour was a small turtle that got caught by the flipper. It was carefully retrieved, measured, and then released in top condition.

There have been occasional sightings of bottlenose dolphins and false killer whales working together around the Mayor Island areas—a great display of teamwork from these intelligent mammals.

Looking ahead, the weekend weather forecast looks pretty damn good! So make the most of it and enjoy.

Cheers,
Russ Hawkins
