Hauraki Gulf
fishing report

January 13, 2023
Thanks for summer! Due to arrive at some stage soon hopefully? Aftermath of a cyclone can sometimes serve up the goods for fisho’s, so let’s hope that’s the case this week out in the gulf.
Based on the most recent activity, the good action is still north of Waiheke in around 40 metres, and across the top of the Firth, where workups are not in full swing as previous weeks, but are turning up and providing some good fishing at times.
The strong easterly flow has not changed direction, but has calmed down based on the forecast for this week, and the weekend should be pretty good to go, with winds in single figures.
The western coastline of the Coromandel should be nice and sheltered, and the inner island channels and reef systems around the west sides of Waiheke, Rakino, etc should also be worth a crack especially first thing in the morning, as the best bite time appears to be from 06.00 to 08.00, with a lesser bite time in the mid-afternoon.
Snapper fishing has buttoned off a bit as normally happens this time of year, but the upside is that they are right in close and you do not have to travel far for the chance of a fish or two.
Game fishing is on pretty much everywhere up the east coast, so if you have the means to get out towards the Mokes or way out past the back of Barrier for a tow, you could be pleasantly rewarded with marlin or yellowfin, or even mahi-mahi at the moment.
Take care and tight lines.
Cheers
