Hunting & Fishing Taupo - Fly & Gun

The winter seems very reluctant to let go at the moment as the rain continues to pour down as I write this. The good news is the fish are still running our local rivers in particular the Tauranga Taupo and the Tongariro, they just keep giving.

The winter seems very reluctant to let go at the moment as the rain continues to pour down as I write this. The good news is the fish are still running our local rivers in particular the Tauranga Taupo and the Tongariro, they just keep giving.

Admittedly you can expect a real mixture of recovering fish as well as the odd squirt of fresh silver bars in on the continued high water levels.

The smaller rivers such as the Hinemaiaia and Waitahanui have pretty much come to the end of their seasons with mainly darker fish now making up the majority.

As we head into October I can sense that spring is trying to warm things up and despite the continual rains the temperatures are starting to rise considerably. On these warmer afternoons I have seen the odd caddis and mayfly hatches starting to happen.

Short lived but enough to get the birds working and the odd fish rising which is always an exciting prospect to see. I have even heard the odd rumour of an evening rise here and there after a warm afternoon.

With so many fish in the system this spring I am really looking forward to some early dry fly action. I can only imagine how good it might be this year given the size and condition of this years runners.

What has been noticeable this spring is how well the fish are recovering after spawning this year.

With so many eggs in the system they have regained condition really quickly and hopefully will not be in a hurry to return to the lake.

If the weather plays ball and we have a warm spring we can expect to see some smelting activity around the shallows on the lake edge, one of my favourite times of the Taupo calendar. You cant beat slowly walking the flats as the colours change and the flowers and the birds enjoy the sun, watching for trout busting up smelt a couple of rod lengths away!!

Just a box of smelt and wooly bugger patterns, a tapered leader and a spool of mono is all that is needed. Just pick a light wind on a sunny day and give it a go.

The lakes have been off to a mixed start as usual for so early in the season. Numbers and condition will improve as the lake gets a little warmer and the invertebrates start to appear in mass. Its amazing how quickly things can change on the lakes.

The new back country season is upon us as I write this report today and yes it is still raining.

This won’t put many people off as they head off to their favourite rivers on their annual pilgrimage.

I will be staying local until things really warm up a bit.

Let's hope it’s a great season and we finally get a prolonged cicada year.

Tight lines from the team and Fly & Gun Hunting and Fishing.
