Rain rain go away, come back another day!

A month of continuous rain and wind has led to a very protracted amount of reporting available on the lake fishing through November and early December.

On the days that have been calm and sunny the boaties have been tasting the start of some good trolling and the start of some reasonably consistent jigging.

Early morning harling has produced some good bags with smelt patterns and Daiwa Chinook lures working extremely well.

As always in the early part of the season there is a mixture of recovering fish and bright silver bars.

High lake levels and well oxygenated water has been condusive to some fantastic hard fighting and very fit fish.

The fly fishing has also been affected for pretty much the whole month of November and into December with high water levels keeping rivers topped up and running very high and fast.

On the rare days that the levels have come down and the water clearing the insect activity has been huge with some of the biggest mayfly hatches I have seen for years on the local rivers.

The evening rise on the local rivers for these few days of lower levels were quite outstanding with some really well recovered fish showing up.

The wetliners have enjoyed an extended season swinging flies down the edges of the higher flows with the occasional brown trout showing up.

As I write this I am looking out on a stunning day here in Taupo, hopefully summer fishing is arriving and boats are out on the lake making the most of the northerly wind and sunshine.

On the positive side you would have to forecast a stunning cicada season after all of the moisture and humidity we have had recently. The back country rivers won’t have had much pressure at all over the last few weeks so should be firing now with very hungry trout looking upwards.

The smaller lakes have also had a mixed month with the wind very often picking up to make fly fishing quite impossible at times.

Once again though, on the days where conditions have been favourable, they have fished incredibly well and the fish that I have been catching have mainly been in stunning condition and fighting fit.

Damsels will be on the main menu so once the sun arrives and the wind drops I forecast some incredible hatches through the remainder of December and into January as they have been held back for over a month now.

As the lake levels start to drop and warm the weedbeds they will come to life and the migration will be on.

All to look forward to now as summer arrives.

For all the flies, lures and local knowledge feel free to drop in and see the team at Fly & Gun Hunting and Fishing as we are out there every week and have our finger on the fishing pulse.

Wishing everybody a great festive season and tight lines to all.

Tight lines from the team and Fly & Gun Hunting and Fishing :-)
