Holiday makers have had some mixed fishing this year on the great lake.

The general consensus is when the weather has allowed the boaties to get out, the quality fish has been good once you find them.

Recently they have tended to be found very deep, at 120-150 feet it's the trollers with heavy lines and downriggers cashing in.

Jigging is just now starting to fire, as small patches of thermocline appear here and there, and the usual 30-40 meter mark has been the most successful depth we have found.

There is still a mixture of recovering fish and bright silver bars for the jiggers at the moment, and hopefully this should improve as smelt populations get driven down to the thermocline concentrating them for the trout to gorge on.

Harling has been very successful for those prepared to get on the water at “sparrows fart” in the morning, with some very good fish being caught in 20-30 feet of water before the sun comes up.

letting out 1.5 to 2 colours of lead with long leaders and smaller sized green orbits and smelt flies seems to deliver the best results

Local fly fishing has once again being a mixed bag and essentially weather dependent.

High, fast and coloured water levels have hindered the river anglers, but those who have managed to get a day on the rivers when at manageable levels have had a ball.

Good dry fly and dropper fishing has been experienced as the trout gorge themselves in the riffles after the high flows.

There has been sporadic evening rises on the warmer evenings with caddis hatches getting stronger and longer.

Wet liners have been doing well locally swinging lures in the higher flows as good numbers of browns are now entering all of our local rivers and have been more than willing to hit big lures swung down the edges in the coloured water.

Go to the smaller black and olive buggers and rabbits as the water drops.

On the warmer days cicadas are chirping at last!

Hopefully as the weather supposedly starts to improve and we get some serious heat we may get a back end cicada bonanza, if all the conditions align and the trout gods smile :-)
