When I was 23 I decided life was too short to be stuck in a job I didn't like so I gave up my job, packed up my Holden Kingswood full of camping and fishing gear and when on a hiatus to Cape Runaway to suss out the monster kingfish lurking around.

I found my Birth Mother, gave up smoking and got fit. After this trip and a number of far north trips I started running landbased fishing charters and selling wholesale fishbait in Wellington.

Now I have a retail fishing shop in Rongotai, a wholesale bait distribution business and run fishing charters on 3 vessels from Mana on Wellingtons West coast.

I usually run an annual fishing competition in the middle of the year, hold instructional fishing classes, seminars and private tuition.

There’s been heaps of fishing happening. Surf casting wise, Palliser Bay remains the hot spot, with good catches of trevally, gurnard, snapper, and a few stray moki.

If your taste in fish is like mine, tarakihi are arguably the best quality eating fish you can catch in New Zealand virtually all year round, and a crumbed fillet at the Fish’n’Chip shop is commonly made from this species. They can be caught throughout the country but are more prevalent around the Cook Straight, east Cape and South Island, and Bay of Plenty regions than they are further north. Not only are they great eating, they also offer a pretty good tussle on the end of the line. You can catch them off the shore and in the boat anywhere from as shallow as five metres, right down to well over a hundred. Without doubt they are probably my favourite eating fish, so although they only grow to a limited size, they are always more than welcome on board.
