Surf fishing for kahawai - Wainuiomata coast

Fishing report for Wellington / Kapiti supplied by Jason Grimmet on Friday the 12th of April 2024

Morena from Wellington

Over the last few weeks, the kahawai have been running hard along the coasts. My son, who is over from Australia for the school holidays, and I chose to head to the Wainuiomata coast to flick lures for kahawai.

Upon arrival, the water was teeming with kahawai, swimming in and out of the swells and the fresh saltwater flows. After experimenting with a few lure changes, we discovered the size and colour they preferred. It was an action-packed morning on day one, with heaps of fish—nearly every cast resulted in a hookup.

As our bin began to fill, we started to behead and gut the fish before placing them in a saltwater bucket. We ended up with around 26 kahawai, which we distributed throughout our community. We continued fishing and handed them out to fellow fishermen and families. One gentleman wasn’t having much luck, so while he continued fishing, my son and I filled his bucket with 12 fish. Seeing him return and the smile on his face was a highlight of the day.

The new Catch Black Label Livies pk 4 x 7" Jerkshad Neho's Nemesis lures worked a treat on the kahawai. All in all, we distributed a heap of kahawai and caught even more for other families.

My son had a ball, mastering the art of the flick, hitting the water, and the retrieve strike.

Have a good one and tight lines!
