North Island summer spearfishing

head off on an epic solo road trip to explore some new coastline of New Zealand for Spearfishing. I am greeted with incredible conditions with flat calm seas and clear, blue water. I find a very fishy piece of coast and manage to spear some huge Snapper, one close to the magic 20-pound mark and spear a nice big Yellowtail Kingfish along with some tasty other species such as John Dory!

The new Motiti Protection Area comes into effect on 11 August 2021, creating three protection areas around Motiti Island where the taking of all plants and animals (including fish and shellfish) will be prohibited. To protect the reef systems, anchoring on these reefs will also be prohibited. This is to protect indigenous biodiversity and acknowledge the significant marine, landscape and cultural values in the area. Those three areas comprise of Ōtaiti (Astrolabe Reef); including Te Papa (Brewis Shoal), Te Porotiti, and O karapu Reef, Motuhaku Island (Schooner Rocks) and Motunau Island (Plate Island).

The shredded rubber, vinyl and other material that makes up most of our trolling lure skirts is pretty flimsy and apt to get damaged, torn or simply chopped clean off by our finny friends. Happily though, replacing them is not that difficult.
